Department metrics explain feature requests
Being a product manager in an enterprise context is different. Sales wants flashy demos because they care about new deals. Operations demands stability because they care about uptime. Finance prioritizes controls because they care about compliance.
Feature requests aren't random - stakeholders optimize for what their departments care about. Sales focused on logos needs first impressions. Operations focused on reliability fights every risky change. Marketing focused on velocity wants quick iterations.
The best enterprise PMs I know ask stakeholders "what does your team care about most?" Then they frame features as helping stakeholders hit those goals while advancing product strategy.
